Winchester and Romsey
This map shows Winchester's location just north of the port city of Southampton, from which there are regular ferries to the Isle of Wight. You can also get a ferry to "the Island" from Lymington - an interesting crossing. Portsmouth is just to the east, on a good train route, and the New Forest and Bournemouth, with its 7 miles of sandy beaches - is to the west. The New Forest and the South Downs are both National Parks, with cycle and footpaths. Stonehenge, the world-famous monument, is just north of Salisbury, another fascinating city.
